It has recently come to my attention that the game I play to have fun can frustrate me when things don't go my way. I began playing in the apa in the summer of 2002. I was brought on by my father to compete with his team of well balanced players, and even though playing with your father can cause enough tension to start a small war, I really just wanted to play pool and have fun, and getting out once a week was OK too. We worked together well enough, minus a fight or two, we all had a good time. We won one of those big trophies and a bunch of little ones with a plack and all. Now its almost 7 years later. I find myself once again Playing pool and loving the game. However, it seems that I have lost sight of the fun side. I practice almost daily for hours at a time and get frustrated when I look at my stats. I now own a pool table in my home and think to myself that if i keep practicing I will be a comfortable 5 soon. Then just last night when shooting my match I looked around and realize that i wasn't having fun at all. Sure I was loosing but it should still be fun. Instead I let things like the condition of the tables or the fact that I cant shoot that night bother me. Pool has lost its shine and is no longer fun for me. So I thought about it, and thought some more. Pool Should be FUN! Meanwhile everyone on the team is a crab and i only get instructions about what I should have done and what should be done next time. I enjoy time outs when needed and a bit of corrective criticism Occasionally, but it seems that criticism is all the game is now. I need to find the game again, the reason I Play, I need the Fun. I still don't care about Vegas, I just want to better myself in the game. I want to have fun playing pool with fun people and that is why I joined the apa. I just want to see the score at the end of the session, and see if I bettered myself. I am In it for the Game NOT FOR VEGAS!!

hey,
I have been playing pool for many years and i know about the apa games. I m in skill level 6 and I do play 9-ball out of stonehouse in Connecticut. I do agree with ur comments and i do get frustrated sometimes when i play and lose lot of games. Some pool tables are out of balance and never being fixed to keep the pool tables straight for good level playing. Also, sometimes the cloth on pool tables are not good and not keeping the cloth cleaned and vaccumed.
I do love to challenge for anything on 9-ball or 8-ball games.
Thank u
Robert Stewart

Attempt crazy bank shots, ridiculous combos, carom shots, impossible cut shots, insane draw shots, and even jump shots if you feel so bold. When you start making those in league play I guarantee you'll get your love for the game back. Its almost like golf in that you can be playing horrible all day and want to quit, than you make that 30 yd chip shot or that 20ft putt and the rest of the days mistakes don't even matter - that rounds gets remembered as the day you made that great shot. You can do it in pool too. Sometimes knowing you successfully made the most difficult shot, something that made people say "wow", can make winning that much better and losing not as significant at all. It all goes down to that match when you made that crazy jump bank shot...
ALSO - I don't know how often you play outside of the APA but going to the bar and "schooling" some people on the pool table can also be a good time and uplifting. |

It's okay to be competitive and you can still make competition fun. Throw in a joke every once in a while when something funny happens. For example, I laugh when I APA a ball in a pocket. The unexpected is always good reason for joking around.
Table conditions can be frustrating when you are used to certain table conditions somewhere else. More unexpected things happen like the ball curves in a different path as it's heading toward a pocket. All players are dealing with the same conditions and all of them have to compensate for it too. What Higham suggests above, trying new and different shots may help bring your focus somewhere else other than on those table conditions.
Checking on your stats and comparing how you did in a previous session is a good measurement tool for your improvement but remember you may be playing different establishments or different players from session to session. Don't get discouraged if your stats are different than you had hoped for them to be. Stats are not everything. If you are satisfied with how you played your match than that goes a long way.

Tribbin, just remember these two bits....
First, if who wins didn't matter, then we wouldn't keep score. At the same time, the score also measures us against ourselves. The score is there to show us how we match up against each other.
Second, rather than getting caught up in the stats, just get caught up in the match. Play each match independent of the numbers and enjoy the competition. If you play the match the best that you can and you get beat, then just nod your head to your opponent and go get 'em next time.
Easier said than done, I know, but I've taken quite a few lumps this session myself, and I find it easier if I just put all the numbers aside and just play pool. |

well there seems to be a couple of issues at hand. number 1, there are a bunch of different variables with getting better. The most importantant thing to remember is to play the table. All the rest is distraction taking you away from your game.Whether its unlevel tables or bad cloth or even a noisey bar. Look at the table more then one way.Where will it benefit you to run the table or play a defense. before you get in trouble take a time out, see if someone else has a different view or opinion of the table. Don't make shots your unsure of. Try to play higher skill levels and bring your focus up. But try not to get locked into an aponents skill level. Just try and play the table, the rest is just distraction. the second thing is about having fun. what I have found is that when i feel part of the team, I shoot the best and i have the most fun. If the team your on doesn't feel that way, You might consider another team. I used to roam from team to team trying to find it, then one day it kinda found me. Lets just say i'm not the youngest in the bowl. However I found a group of young people for a team. There team is competitive, Our skill levels are well rounded, And these guys really like to party and have fun. We all try to pick ourselves up. sometimes not everyone gets to play everynight, and we don't always win, however everyone is in it for our team. We win as a team we lose as a team. And in the end its a great time. I hope this helps out, and good luck with your venture. |

| I love our team, we are all in it for the fun, it can be frustrating to not have won a match yet this season, but last night I held my own against a 5 (I am a 2) and took it to 6 games. Might have beat him if not for the early eight on the last game, still don't know how I did that one. But our team did win all the other matches last night. |

I have said this to you before and I will say it again.....You are welcome to join either of my teams..We do have fun.and talent..and you also know all of my teamates..We play we win thats super..We play and we loose thats super as well.Have you ever seen or heard me chasitise any of my teamates?Anyway...Start your own team and move on..Change is good and I personaly think that you may feel better about the game again..But again it is my opinion.I enjoy giveing my players a handshake win or lose..The funny thing is as I know. If my teamate lost.He should be able to tell me why ...My point is.I dont interupt your game...You will be fine in any case but if you ever care to talk..Feel free to with me anytime..You are an excellent player !!Your also a friend...

| Tubbs has some pretty good advice, however I feel that it is wrong to exclude an awareness of who you are playing and simply play the table. Pool is a game played between two people; you and your opponent. It is not played between you and the table. The table cannot hurt you with a lockup safety, but an opponent knowing that you are weak in kicking can. You should always pay attention to your opponents body language and mannerisms both on and off the table. Visibly, you are going to see what shots he/she is good at, and what shots he/she is weak at. If I know you cannot cut balls on the short rail with the cb past the center pockets, guess where I am going to park the 8 in a case game? Also, does your opponent shift his/her focus on and off the table alot, or are they sitting up, eyes open, ready to pounce on your next error? If you are getting upset trying to get out of a safety shot I played, then you can bet I am going to safe you over and over barring the layout is run-out friendly. The very best players show very little inconsistencies in there expressions throughout the match. But always remember to have fun. Thats what this is all about. |

That's a great point Dave! Similar to poker players, know when you watch them or are one of them playing cards, you must have a "poker face" if you don't want your opponent to figure your hand (or you) out as easily.
You should absolutely pay attention to your opponent's strengths and weaknesses as it may affect your shot choices during each game. How you play the game against others; however, should be consistent in that you do not want to relax yourself too much and make too many mistakes just because you are playing a lower skill level and think you may get another shot at the table, because you may not.

Some people seem to misunderstand me. I was simply saying that I started the in the apa to achieve 3 basic goals. To meet people , play pool and have fun ! It was fun at first ,, but it seems that criticism has dominated the league. Even if you win you got someone saying what you should have done with some ball on the 2nd game .... blah blah blah . It just takes away from the fun of it all .
